QCU Showcases Urban Farming Initiatives to C40 Regional Academy
Quezon City University (QCU) hosted the C40 Regional Academy visit on September 5, 2024, marking the event with a vibrant and culturally rich Tausug dance performance, a traditional Muslim presentation reflecting the Philippines’ diverse heritage. This colorful performance served as a fitting introduction to the university’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement.
Following the cultural showcase, QCU President Dr. Theresita V. Atienza led a discussion highlighting the collaborative efforts between Quezon City and QCU in driving sustainable urban development. At the forefront of these efforts is QCU’s urban farming initiatives, through the Center for Urban Agriculture and Innovation, which play a critical role in promoting food security and environmental sustainability. Dr. Atienza emphasized the role of research and innovation in these programs, as the university continues to explore advanced agricultural techniques suitable for urban environments.
During her speech, Dr. Atienza reiterated QCU’s mission to provide access to free, quality tertiary education while expanding its reach through various community extension projects. She noted that these initiatives not only benefit the academic community but also empower surrounding neighborhoods by integrating sustainable practices into everyday life.
Delegates were introduced to an array of sustainable agricultural practices such as composting, hydroponics, and vertical gardening. These techniques, tailored for urban settings, are part of QCU’s vision to create a self-sufficient and sustainable food system for urban dwellers. The farm also serves as a living laboratory for students and researchers, providing hands-on experience in urban agriculture while addressing real-world challenges like limited space, soil degradation, and climate change.
By showcasing these innovations, QCU not only reaffirmed its role as a leader in sustainable development but also demonstrated the university’s commitment to fostering global partnerships and addressing the climate challenges faced by urban communities around the world. The visit left a lasting impression on the C40 delegates, positioning QCU as a model institution for integrating education, research, and sustainable urban practices.
As cities worldwide continue to grapple with the dual challenges of population growth and climate change, QCU’s initiatives in urban farming and sustainability underscore the crucial role that educational institutions can play in building resilient and sustainable cities for the future.
