QCU Welcomes New Batch of QC-OSY Be Your Own Boss Project
The Quezon City University, through QC Small Business and Cooperatives Development and Promotions Office (QC SBCDPO) and in partnership with USAID Opportunity 2.0, and Education Development Center, conducted the four-day Be Your Own Boss (BYOB) – QC Youth Entrepreneurship Program from September 10 – 13, 2024 at Quezon City University.
The project led by the QCU College of Business Administration and Accountancy under the supervision of the REPL- Extension Management Office was attended by a total of 44 QCitizen out-of-school youths, aged 18-24 years old, from the different barangays in Districts 5 and 6 of Quezon City.
The project, which officially commenced last September 10, 2024, was led by Dr. Theresita V. Atienza, President of the Quezon City University. In her opening remarks she extended her gratitude to the university’s strong partners in working for a cause. Further, she also encouraged the participants to continue their education at Quezon City University and develop their entrepreneurial skills under the Entrepreneurship Department.
In her speech she stated: “Ang isang successful na entrepreneur, ay hindi lamang pinanganak na entrepreneur, nagiging successful ang entrepreneur kung may training at nag-aral siya…. Sana muli namin kayong makita sa Quezon City University na Boss na, at nag-aaral pa.”
The Project Be Your Own Boss Youth Entrepreneurship Program is a four-session training program which aims to deepen the participants’ understanding of business planning and operations. These sessions will equip them to establish their own businesses and support their daily livelihoods.
The opening ceremony was attended by various partners of the university for this project. Ms. Mona Celine Marie V. Yap, Head of the Quezon City Business and Cooperatives Development and Promotions Office gave her message of support and introduced the QC SBCDPO. She discussed the various initiatives and programs implemented by the office to support QCitizens in their entrepreneurial endeavors. She has also presented the beneficiaries who successfully grew their start-up, and the business cooperatives they can find within Quezon City Hall. After her speech, Ms. Hazel Duya, representing USAID Opportunity 2.0 – EDC, delivered a message of support. She highlighted USAID’s mission of providing second chances and emphasized the organization’s commitment to monitoring grant implementation. The opening ceremony ended with a message from Abigail Elardo, a former out-of-school youth and completer of Project BYOB (BYOB) QC YEP and now a 2nd Yr Student enrolled under the BS Entrepreneurship of the University.
After the opening ceremony, the first day of training was led by Mr. Emmanuel Garcia discussing the Business Concept, where he gave the participants an overview of the field of business. It was followed by a discussion on the characteristics of a successful business owner, which was led by Dr. Erlee Angel Reyes. The topic aimed to enrich the skills and abilities of the OSYs in establishing their own businesses. On the second day of the program, various topics were discussed- beginning with the topic on Business Ideas, which was led by Mr. Reginald Espiritu. This topic taught them what can be the source of their business ideas, and how they will know if it is feasible through testing it. It was followed by a collaborative discussion on Customer Service led by Ms. Jo Ann Mariano, they encouraged the participants to join in role playing where they acted on how to properly handle various customers in a professional manner. After this, Dr. Federico Ramos Jr. led the discussion on marketing. The basics of marketing were taught for them to know properly their competitiveness in the market through research, and how they will strategize their marketing through developing a comprehensive plan.
The third day of the program began with a discussion on finance led by Ms. Marjorie Daganas. The topic taught them how they will separate the personal and business expenses. She also taught them how to estimate the income, expenses, and profit. An activity was done after the discussion to put the lessons into practice. After the topic of finance, Ms. Lorna Suyat led the discussion on the Business Plan. She introduced the concept of it, how they are going to write and present it.
Prof. Jessica Sintos-Pagulayan led the 4th day’s activity. Joined by a group of selected general managers, they guided participants in developing their individual and group business plans. The general managers provided valuable insights and expertise, assisting participants in crafting and presenting their plans.
Following the business plan presentation, Mr. Lenard F. Bien, LPT, concluded each day’s session with a comprehensive synthesis of the key discussion.
