QCU Research Colloquium 2023 Unveils Insights into Graduates’ Trajectories through Tracer Studies
More than 105 faculty members of Quezon City University (QCU) attended the year-end University Research Colloquium with the theme “Navigating Trajectories: Unveiling Insights through Tracer Research,” held on December 13, 2023, at the QCU Library Resources and Services Center.
Six faculty members from different colleges participated in the colloquium, which was held to provide the university researchers an avenue to present the findings of their studies. The primary focus of the majority of the research papers was to assess the institutional outcomes of the respondents and trace the employability of the graduates from the years 2020 to 2022 in line with the theme of this year’s second research colloquium
The presented papers were as follows:
- Dr. Nina Apusaga – Tracer Study of Quezon City University Industrial Engineering Graduates Between Years 2020-2022: Inputs for Intervention
- Mr. Emmanuel Garcia – Tracer Study on the Employment Outcomes of Entrepreneurship Graduates
- Mr. Alfred Cesar C. Quinsay, CPA, MBA – A Tracer Study of 2022 Graduates from the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at Quezon City University
- Mr. Redentor G. Bucaling, Jr. – Tracer Study on the Employment Outcomes of Information Technology Graduates Year 2020 to 2022
- Engr. Leonard A. Catchillar – Tracer study of Electronics Engineering Graduates in Quezon City University for Academic Years 2020-2022
- Dr. Federico B. Ramos, Jr. – University Activity Incubation Center: Business Growth Plan, Fostering and Implementation on Enterprise for QCU Students
Mr. Wilson Padillon, faculty member of the College of Education; Dr. Isagani M. Tano, former Dean of the College of Computer Studies, and Dr. Randel Estacio, Dean of the College of Education served as the members of the panel. Each presenter was given 15 minutes to present their paper followed by the Question and Answer portion with the panelists and the open forum with the participants.
The research methodology employed across these studies uniformly leveraged survey forms, primarily administered through Google Forms, adapted from the university’s tracer instrument. The overarching goal was to assess institutional outcomes and trace the employability of graduates between the years 2020 to 2022. Dr. Apusaga, for instance, highlighted a high employability rate in the Industrial Engineering department, signaling success but also emphasizing the need for ongoing instrument refinement. High employability was also recorded among graduates of the Electronics Engineering Department as presented by Engr. Catchillar.
Despite challenges faced in reaching graduates, especially noted by Mr. Garcia in the Entrepreneurship department, the presenters acknowledged the significance of their programs in preparing students for future employment. The IT Department, as presented by Mr. Bucaling, underscored the relevance of their IT curriculum to career skills, with critical thinking topping the list of valued competencies.
Meanwhile, Mr. Quinsay noted that a majority of the first batch of accountancy graduates were able to secure jobs that aligned closely with the field of their studies, specifically in well-known accountancy firms. Mr. Quinsay, who is a faculty member of the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) – Accountancy Department was also recognized as the Best Research Presenter during the event.
After the presentation and awarding of certificates, the participants proceeded to the QCU Auditorium for the Keynote Speech by Dr. Merigen Sarreal-Cafino, Education Supervisor II of the Commission on Higher Education- National Capital Region Office (CHED-NCRO) who spoke on behalf of Dr. Julieta Paras, Regional Director of CHED-NCRO. She highlighted the importance of research especially for a University like QCU. She reminded the attendees to always keep in mind that research is the lifeblood of any University. She also discussed the University Typology, where Universities like QCU should have a core of permanent faculty members who are actively involved in research and have engaged in patenting, research publication, and book publication.
Dr. Theresita V. Atienza, in her closing remarks, underscored the importance of ongoing research output as an integral aspect of QCU’s four-fold functions, encouraging faculty members to contribute to future research activities as the university strives for Level III Accreditation.
Also present during the event was Dr. Bradford Antonio C. Martinez, Vice President for Academic Affairs as well as other administrative officials and employees of the University.
