SDG 4 8 10 17

Quezon City, October 1, 2024 — Quezon City University (QCU), through its College of Computer Studies, Information Technology Program, has officially launched the Computer Literacy Program (CLiP), a university-wide initiative designed to equip out-of-school youth (OSY) enrolled in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) with essential digital skills.

The first phase of Project CLiP runs from October 1-4, 2024, focusing on a cohort of ALS-OSY students from Barangay Sta. Lucia. Participants will receive hands-on training in key areas, including basic computer hardware and troubleshooting and office productivity tools.

This pioneering initiative is a result of a collaborative effort across various sectors of the university, under the supervision of the Research, Extension, Planning and Linkages (REPL)-Extension Management Office. It draws active support from faculty members of the BS Information Technology Program, BSIT Laboratory Staff, Non-Teaching Personnel through the ICT Office, BSIT alumni, students, and even parents.

The opening ceremony, held at the QCU Laboratory Building, was graced by community partners and ALS participants. Key figures from the community shared their messages, starting with Ms. Margie Canaria, ALS teacher and coordinator, who expressed her gratitude to the university for involving ALS learners in Project CLiP. She emphasized how the program directly addresses the need for ALS students to access ICT facilities as part of their digital citizenship lessons.

Ms. Marla C. Matutino, a parent of a QCU student, also expressed her appreciation for being included in the initiative. Not only did she, along with other parents, serve as facilitators, but they also gained valuable insights from the training. The event showcased the inclusive nature of the program, as parents and guardians of BSIT students played a vital role in its success.

Among the BSIT alumni present was Ms. Maria Lourdes D. Pariñas, who highlighted the importance of alumni engagement in giving back to the university through community extension services. Many alumni contributed by serving as part of the secretariat and facilitators for the program.

In his remarks, Mr. Lenard F. Bien, Acting Director of the Extension Management Office and Head of the Community Engagement Unit, emphasized the university’s commitment to empowering its surrounding communities. He reiterated that Project CLiP is part of QCU’s strategic direction to offer “joyful service” and contribute to the community’s growth, regardless of sector.

With this successful launch, Project CLiP begins its journey of empowering Quezon City’s youth with essential digital literacy, aiming to provide more batches in the future to continue its mission of bridging the digital divide.
