QCU Enhances Admin Employees’ Research Capabilities through Successful Writing Seminar

SDG 4

A part of its commitment to research excellence, Quezon City University (QCU) recently conducted a Training on Effective Writing for Administrative Employees from December 20 to 22, 2023, as part of the University’s Research and Extension Capability Advancement Program (RECAP).

The seminar, organized by the Research, Extension, Planning, and Linkages – Research Management Office (REPL-RMO), aimed to enhance the writing skills of 40 admin employees from various colleges, departments, and units of the University.

Facilitated by Mr. Angelito P. Bautista Jr., Acting Director of REPL-RMO, the three-day seminar workshop delved into the essential aspects of business and technical writing, specifically emphasizing its relevance to the development of research proposals for external grants.

“We hope that at your level, you can already identify the errors in any technical documents – business letters, invitations, research proposals, and grant documents to name a few – before they are released to other offices or before they are received by your offices. In that way, we are raising our standards in our University,” Mr. Bautista said.

The first day commenced with a pre-test to gauge participants’ knowledge, followed by an introduction to RECAP and the seminar objectives. Mr. Bautista’s sessions covered effective writing characteristics, business email etiquette, and the basics of letter writing. Practical exercises, including a workshop on thank you letters and error identification, helped the participants enrich their understanding of the topic.

The second day focused on business letters do’s and don’ts, and technical writing elements. Participants engaged in various activities such as improving letters and understanding commonly confused words. The afternoon sessions explored technical documents and included a workshop on effective memoranda writing.

The final day featured a discussion on essential writing characteristics, common mistakes, and email etiquette.

In her closing message, Dir. Tess Gutierrez of the Administrative Services Department emphasized the vital role that admin employees play within the University. She thanked the participants for attending the workshop and encouraged them to attend future activities that will help enhance their capabilities, especially in the area of research.
