Policy for Minimization of Disposable Items: Prohibition of Bottled Water and Single-Use

SDG 12 13

Quezon City University (QCU), through its Multi-Purpose Cooperative, has taken another decisive step in advancing its sustainability agenda by prohibiting the sale of bottled water, plastic cups, and single-use utensils on campus effective October 1, 2024. This initiative aligns with Quezon City Ordinances No. 2868-2019 and 2876-2019, which ban single-use plastics in establishments as part of the city’s environmental protection strategy.

Concessionaires were directed to clear their remaining stock of bottled water, plastic cups, utensils, and bags by September 30, 2024 and to shift to eco-friendly alternatives such as wooden utensils, paper cups, and reusable containers. Personal reusable water bottles are strongly encouraged, and water refill stations have been made available throughout the campus to ensure convenience for students and employees.

By implementing this policy, QCU not only complies with local government directives but also contributes to the global call for sustainable production and consumption (SDG 12) and climate action (SDG 13). The move reduces plastic waste, fosters a culture of reusability, and promotes healthier, more environmentally responsible habits within the university community.

This initiative reflects QCU’s broader commitment to creating a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable learning environment. It also strengthens the university’s position as a proactive partner in addressing environmental challenges, showing that even everyday choices—such as drinking water from a reusable bottle—can significantly impact the fight against plastic pollution.
