Building Skills for Sustainability: Team QCU RISE Completes Basic Hand Sewing Training

In preparation for the implementation of the NextGen Impact Project of Team QCU RISE entitled, “CIRCULAR THREADS: Campus-to-Community Textile Recovery and Upcycling Initiatives,” in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (HUTECH), Team QCU RISE successfully completed a Basic Hand Sewing Training to equip its members with the knowledge and practical skills needed to effectively cascade the project to the selected student beneficiaries of Talipapa National High School.

The training was facilitated by Ms. Merlie P. Luna, Program Chairperson of the Quezon City University National Service Training Program (NSTP) Department and ROTC Coordinator. Through a series of hands-on learning activities, she shared essential hand sewing techniques and practical approaches to textile upcycling, enabling the student leaders to confidently deliver future training sessions and mentor their beneficiaries.

The training concluded with the awarding of a Certificate of Appreciation to Ms. Luna by Dr. Theresita V. Atienza, President of Quezon City University, in recognition of her invaluable contribution to the capacity-building of Team QCU RISE. In her message, Dr. Atienza expressed her sincere gratitude to the students for their active participation and commitment, and reaffirmed the University’s dedication to advancing textile recovery and upcycling initiatives through experiential learning, innovation, and community engagement that create meaningful and sustainable impact.

Armed with new skills and a stronger sense of purpose, Team QCU RISE is now ready to cascade the project to the students of Talipapa National High School, empowering them to transform discarded textiles into meaningful products while promoting environmental stewardship, creativity, and community participation.
