QCU joins Discussion on IT Jobs for Persons with Disabilities
On June 6, 2024, the National Vocational Rehabilitation Center (NVRC), a part of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) – NCR, hosted a Zoom-based Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to identify job opportunities in the field of IT for persons with disabilities. This initiative aimed to enhance economic productivity within the disabled community and drew participation from various stakeholders who were eager to explore inclusive employment opportunities through technology.
Representing Quezon City University (QCU) at the FGD was OIC-Dean Asst. Prof. Lalaine Josefa Carrao from the College of Computer Studies. The event was facilitated by Ms. Maria Liza F. Mahinay, the Center Head of NVRC, and featured a lineup of speakers who provided insights into the skills and competencies required for IT roles, with a focus on those suitable for persons with disabilities.
Ms. Midori Ritz Crusin, the CEO and Founder of The Career Mom Guru, shared valuable perspectives on the essential skills needed for virtual assistant roles, highlighting their accessibility for individuals with basic technical knowledge. Mr. Mario Lucas from a Training Center emphasized the significance of both technical proficiency and soft skills in enhancing employability, especially for individuals with visual impairments.
Engr. Marx Vergel Melencio presented future job trends in the IT sector, predicting growth areas such as Generative AI Engineering and Technical SEO Engineering. His insights emphasized the dynamic nature of technology-driven careers and the evolving demands of the industry.
In the afternoon session, Mr. Alfred Gersava from Virtualahan showcased their innovative approach to skills development, focusing on inclusive virtual training programs that empower marginalized groups.
The FGD concluded with a commitment to fostering more opportunities for integrating persons with disabilities into the IT workforce. This commitment involves leveraging partnerships and innovative solutions to promote inclusivity and economic empowerment.
