QCU-ITSO Successfully Hosts Basic Patent Search Training Workshops
By: Joe Andrew Esposo
The Intellectual Property and Technology Support Office (ITSO) at Quezon City University recently organized two intensive Basic Patent Search Training Workshops to provide participants with the necessary skills for effective patent searching. The workshops took place on May 9-10, 2024, and May 13-14, 2024 at the university’s Laboratory Building, San Bartolome Campus.
The workshops began with an opening speech by Ms. Maria Aura C. Impang, Chief of the Intellectual Property Unit and General Manager of QCU-ITSO. She emphasized the workshops’ role in fostering innovation among graduating engineering and information systems students. Mr. Redentor G. Bucaling Jr., Program Chairperson of the Information Systems Program, also provided welcoming remarks, highlighting the importance of intellectual property in the digital age.
During the workshops, Mr. Angelito P. Bautista Jr., Director of the Research Management Office (RMO), delivered comprehensive sessions on the Intellectual Property (IP) system. The focus of these sessions was on methodologies and tools essential for effective patent searching. Participants were introduced to platforms such as Espacenet, Patentscope, and Google Patents, and were tasked with creating Patent Search Reports to apply their newly acquired skills.
On the second day of each workshop, Mr. Bautista discussed advanced topics including Invention Spotting, Claims Drafting, and Specification Writing. These sessions provided participants with practical insights and strategies. QCU-ITSO coordinators Engr. Rhea Makinano-Arlante and Prof. Paula Joy Dela Cruz facilitated interactive sessions where participants presented their Patent Search Reports and received constructive feedback aimed at improving their reports.
Approximately 50 engineering and IT students, representing 50 capstone and thesis groups, actively participated in formulating their own basic search reports tailored for their thesis projects. Selected groups will have the opportunity to attend a forthcoming Basic Patent Drafting Seminar-Workshop, which will further enhance their patent-related knowledge and skills.
