QCU Hosts Round Table Discussion on High-Impact Service-Learning for Community Development
Quezon City University (QCU) hosted a highly engaging round table discussion on designing and implementing high-impact service-learning programs for community development organized by the Office of Research Extension, Planning, and Linkages (REPL).
The discussion gathered QCU officials, faculty members, students, and community representatives from Barangay Sauyo, Barangay Sta. Lucia, and Barangay Talipapa. Together, they focused on presenting community needs, evaluating past service-learning initiatives, and collaboratively planning future projects aimed at addressing local issues such as education, health, environmental sustainability, and economic development.
The event was structured into three key sessions. The first session featured resource speakers from Barangay Sauyo who conducted needs analysis. Facilitators included Hon. Karen Joyce Quilo-Diaz, Bgy Kagawad, and Ms. Marry Joy E. Arminal, Public Relations Staff. The session engaged faculty and students from College of Engineering and College of Computer Studies.
The second session focused on evaluating and analyzing the needs of Barangay Sta. Lucia. Resource speakers included Hon. SK Chairman Xyrone Pelayo, Mr. Jomar Alvarez, and Ms. Juvy Jumadiao Dela Torre (computer literacy beneficiaries). Participants included faculty and students from College of Education and NSTP.
The final session addressed the needs of Barangay Talipapa, with resource speakers led by Hon. Barangay Captain Atty. Eric Juan. Faculty and students from the Entrepreneurship department participated.
The round table began with opening remarks and an inspirational message from QCU President, Dr. Theresita V. Atienza. Followed by a briefing to outline the program flow. Barangay officials from each community introduced their respective areas, highlighting their status, growth, achievements, and pressing needs. They emphasized the vital role service-learning plays in cultivating sustainable partnerships between the university and the community.
The round table discussion was pivotal in refining QCU’s service-learning program. The event evaluated past service-learning initiatives, allowing participants to identify successes and areas for improvement, ensuring future projects are more effective. It also provided valuable insights into the community’s evolving needs, helping QCU prioritize projects that will have the most significant impact.
The event reinforced the spirit of collaboration between faculty, students, and community stakeholders, essential for successful service-learning programs. By focusing on sustainability, the discussions ensured that service-learning projects would create lasting positive outcomes for the community.
