QCU-ITSO Equip BSIT Students with Patent Search Skills

Quezon City University (QCU), through the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) in collaboration with the College of Computer Studies (CCS), conducted a two-day Patent Search Workshop for CCS Batch 1 and Batch 2 on September 1–2 and September 15–16, 2026, respectively.

The workshops engaged fourth year BS Information Technology students serving as project managers and documentation team leaders of their capstone project groups. The sessions provided practical knowledge and hands-on experience in conducting patent searches and examining existing technologies related to their project ideas.

Led by Prof. Maria Aura C. Impang, General Manager of QCU-ITSO, the workshops introduced students to the importance of patent searching in identifying existing solutions, refining project concepts, and reviewing available technologies before development.

Participants applied the Problem Solution Approach, developed Search Matrices using relevant keywords and search strategies, and prepared Patent Search Reports based on findings from various patent databases. Student teams also presented and discussed their search results, receiving guidance and feedback to improve their search techniques and identify relevant patent documents.

The activity highlighted the role of patent information in supporting informed innovation, strengthening capstone development, and promoting intellectual property awareness among students.

Through the continued collaboration of QCU-ITSO and CCS, QCU remains committed to equipping students with the knowledge and tools to search, create, innovate, and protect their ideas.
