QCU Strengthens Commitment to Inclusively Through Gender Awareness Orientation
Promoting understanding, respect, and equality took center stage during a successful Gender Awareness Orientation that gathered members of the university community for meaningful discussions on gender sensitivity and LGBTQ+ rights.
The event featured distinguished guest speakers who provided valuable insights into key gender-related issues. Marie Concepcion Roño, GAD Consultant of the Quezon City Government, laid the foundation by clarifying essential gender concepts. She explained the distinction between sex and gender and emphasized that gender is not a battle between sexes, but rather a shared space that calls for empathy, mutual respect, and understanding.
Highlighting the importance of legal protections and advocacy, Clara Rita Padilla, Consultant at the Quezon City Protection Center and Founder and Executive Director of EnGendeRights, discussed LGBTQ+ rights and the existing Quezon City ordinance that safeguards members of the community. She also addressed the challenges faced in the implementation of these policies and underscored the need for continued vigilance and collective action to ensure that rights are upheld in practice.
Providing an institutional perspective, Jane Irish Galacia, Attorney III of the Human Resource Management Department, shared insights on gender-related concerns within workplace and organizational settings. Her discussion reinforced the importance of creating safe, inclusive, and equitable environments across all sectors.
Both sessions concluded with an open forum, offering participants the opportunity to raise questions, exchange perspectives, and deepen their understanding of the topics discussed. The interactive dialogue reflected the community’s commitment to learning and growth.
Through initiatives like this Gender Awareness Orientation, the university continues to take proactive steps toward building a society that upholds inclusivity, dignity, and equal rights for all.
