QCU Joins Global Conversation on University Innovation and Development at WURI Global Conference 2025
Quezon City University (QCU) joined universities from around the world at the World Universities Ranking for Innovation (WURI) Global Conference 2025, held from September 24 to 26, 2025, at Tongmyong University in Busan, South Korea. The event brought together 435 participants from 140 universities across 23 countries to showcase and exchange innovative approaches to higher education that go beyond traditional rankings.
This year, WURI 2025 ranked QCU among the world’s innovative universities, recognizing it for its strong focus on visionary leadership (Rank 15), infrastructure (Rank 24), and industrial application (Rank 63).
The conference opened with welcome remarks from Dr. Sang-Chun Lee, President of Tongmyong University, and keynote messages from Dr. Dong-Sung Cho, Chair of the WURI Foundation, who discussed the two-axis model of innovation—covering “for whom” universities innovate and “how” they deliver impact. Speakers emphasized that WURI’s goal is to highlight creativity, social contribution, and forward-thinking strategies beyond traditional measures of prestige.
Sessions featured topics such as Ethics and Integrity in Higher Education, Cost-Effectiveness in University Management, Visionary Leadership, and SDG-Based Responses to Global Change. Parallel sessions were also held where selected universities presented their top-ranked case studies across 16 WURI categories, covering areas such as entrepreneurship, student mobility, crisis management, ethical leadership, and sustainability.
On behalf of QCU President Dr. Theresita V. Atienza, Mr. Angelito P. Bautista Jr., Director of the Research Management Office, presented the paper “Navigating Innovation: The Role and Impact of WURI Rankings on the Strategic Management of Selected Local Universities and Colleges in the Philippines in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” The presentation discussed how local universities are utilizing the WURI framework to inform strategic planning, integrate innovation, and address the emergence of artificial intelligence in education.
In addition, QCU joined the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tongmyong University, strengthening opportunities for academic exchange, research collaboration, and student mobility.
Participation in the WURI Global Conference is part of QCU’s continuing effort to learn from global peers, share its community-driven innovations, and build networks that support its long-term strategic goals. As a growing local university, QCU is steadily gaining international recognition for its work in sustainability, social impact, and educational transformation.
The World Universities Ranking for Innovation (WURI) is an international evaluation system that recognizes higher education institutions for innovation and real-world impact rather than traditional indicators such as size, wealth, or historical prestige. WURI’s 16 categories measure how universities create social value, promote entrepreneurship, foster ethical leadership, support student engagement, and respond to global challenges. It provides a future-oriented alternative to conventional rankings by valuing creativity, relevance, and contribution to society.
