SDG 4 9

The Quezon City University – College of Engineering successfully organized its first student research colloquium entitled “PIONEER 2023: Providing Innovative Opportunities to Nurture Engineering Education through Research” on April 29, 2023 at the QCU Auditorium.

Attended by faculty members, students, and officials of the QCU College of Engineering, led by Dr. Theresita V. Atienza, University President, and Dr. Ryan F. Arago, Dean of the College of Engineering, PIONEER 2023 was aimed at highlighting the capstone projects and feasibility studies of Electronics Engineering and Industrial Engineering students and provide them a platform to showcase their research work and innovative ideas.

Dr. Bradford Antonio C. Martinez, QCU Vice President for Academic Affairs, welcomed the participants of the colloquium to start the event and congratulated the organizers for successfully holding the first student research colloquium of the college. President Atienza then gave a motivational speech, emphasizing how research and innovation are beneficial for the personal and professional growth of the students and the whole university.

Three esteemed guests were also invited to discuss relevant topics during the morning session.  First was Dr. Randel D. Estacio, Dean of the College of Education, who delivered a talk on ‘The 3 P’s of Research Dissemination.’ He emphasized the importance of research, the steps students need to take to come up with quality research papers, and the value of publishing research articles as a part of the research dissemination process.

He was followed by Dr. Ria Liza C. Canlas, an intellectual property (IP) consultant from the National Innovation Council. Her talk focus on ‘The Road to Commercialization,’ the highlights of Republic Act No. 11337 or The Innovative Startup Act, and what students and innovators need to consider as IP owners and developers. The last resource speaker was Ms. Bianca Claudette Canlas from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), who discussed the different programs, research grants, and support that the DOST provides to academic institutions and private organizations.

In the afternoon, the research poster exhibit and oral presentations were held in Rooms 101 and 301. A total of 18 papers were presented and 19 posters were exhibited. Capstone projects are a significant component of the Electronics Engineering program, where students demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge and skills gained throughout their studies. Meanwhile, feasibility studies are essential to Industrial Engineering students, who evaluate the feasibility of a project or process by analyzing various factors such as economic, technical, and environmental factors. The event was held in partnership with the QCU REPL-Research Management Office, and the DOST – National Capital Region. This event was also made possible by One Bit Corporation, OmniFab Incorporated, Hyctec Power Incorporated, and Letrato Incorporated.
