Plastic Use Reduction: QCU Launches Reusable Lunchbox Initiative
In support of Quezon City’s environmental ordinances and QCU’s own sustainability agenda, the QCU Multi-Purpose Cooperative has introduced the Reusable Lunchbox Initiative, effective January 1, 2024.
This policy directly addresses the challenge of single-use plastics by prohibiting the sale and distribution of plastic bags, plastic cutlery, cups, bottled water, and disposable utensils on campus, while encouraging the use of personal reusable containers.
The initiative complies with Quezon City Ordinances Nos. 2868-2021 and 2876-2019, both designed to curb plastic waste in communities. In implementing this directive, QCU reinforces its role as a responsible institution, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and 13 (Climate Action). By banning single-use plastics within its canteens and concessionaires, QCU significantly reduces its ecological footprint, setting a model for other academic institutions to follow.
The Cooperative urges all employees and students to bring reusable lunchboxes and beverage containers for take-out meals. This simple adjustment in daily practice fosters a sustainable lifestyle while cultivating awareness of personal responsibility in waste reduction. Reusable containers not only minimize waste but also promote healthier and more eco-friendly consumption habits. Concessionaires have also been directed to comply strictly, ensuring a collective effort toward sustainability.
The policy encourages the use of clean, leak-proof, and appropriately sized reusable lunchboxes to guarantee convenience and hygiene. By normalizing reusable practices on campus, QCU ensures that every meal taken contributes to a cleaner school environment and a healthier future for students and staff.
This Policy for Minimization of Plastic Use demonstrates that QCU’s sustainability efforts extend beyond classrooms and into everyday campus operations. Through this initiative, QCU demonstrates that small, consistent choices—such as carrying a lunchbox instead of relying on single-use packaging—can have a lasting impact on environmental protection. As a community, QCU is shaping future-ready graduates who not only excel academically but also embrace their role as stewards of the environment.
