QCU Engineering Students Strengthen Intellectual Property and Patent Search Skills
Quezon City University (QCU), through the Innovation and Technology Support Office (QCU-ITSO), in collaboration with the College of Engineering (COE), conducted two day Intellectual Property (IP) and Patent Search Workshops for 4th-year engineering students.
The workshops were held for 4th-year Industrial Engineering (IE) students on September 3–4, 2026, followed by Batch 2 for 4th-year Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) students on September 17–18, 2026.
The sessions introduced students to the fundamentals of intellectual property, including patents, utility models, industrial designs, and QCU policies concerning student projects. Engr. Crystalynne D. Cortez, ITSO Coordinator for the College of Engineering, led the first half of Day 1, while Prof. Maria Aura C. Impang, General Manager of QCU ITSO, facilitated the succeeding sessions and guided students through hands on patent searches using
actual patent databases.
Working in teams, students explored existing technologies related to their engineering project ideas and practiced developing search terms, identifying relevant patent documents, and reviewing existing technologies.
The workshops included three key activities: the Problem Solution Approach, Search Matrix, and Patent Search Report, which helped students analyze their project ideas and organize their patent search findings.
The activities concluded with group presentations and discussions, where students presented their findings and received feedback on improving their patent search strategies.
Through the workshops, QCU ITSO and the College of Engineering continue to strengthen students’ knowledge and practical skills in intellectual property, research, and innovation, preparing them to develop and protect solutions for real-world challenges.
