QCU Joins ALCUCOA’s 39th Capability Training on Transformative Education

SDG 4 17

The Association of Local Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (ALCUCOA) hosted its 39th Capability Training on September 10–12, 2025, at Hotel Salcedo de Vigan, Ilocos Sur, with the theme “Transformative Education through Research and Extension.”

Quezon City University (QCU) joined the three-day event with seven delegates representing the Research, Extension, Planning, and Linkages (REPL) office; the Colleges of Business, Computer Studies, and Education; and the Center for Urban Agriculture and Innovation (CUAI).

The training aimed to strengthen the competencies of local colleges and universities (LCUs) in research, extension, accreditation, future-thinking, and design innovation.

In his opening message, Dr. Reggie Maningas, President of Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Pasig, reminded participants that research should focus on impact rather than numbers. ALCUCOA Executive Director Dr. Raymund Arcega, joining via Zoom, also stressed the responsibility of LCUs to embed research as a tool for social transformation.

The sessions were led by Prof. Ronald Allan S. Mabunga, Ph.D., of the Philippine Normal University. Topics covered included research design, futures thinking and foresight using the VUCA-D2 framework, and design thinking as a human-centered approach to innovation. A plenary on institutional research capped the program, underscoring its role in accreditation, policy development, and program monitoring.

QCU’s output during the futures thinking workshops—integrating community needs with global sustainability goals—was recognized for its clarity and practicality.

The event closed with awarding ceremonies and remarks from Dr. Jean Paolo Lacap of City College of Angeles, who emphasized that research and extension must serve as vehicles for transformation.

For QCU, the training reinforced the need to strengthen its research culture, align extension programs with institutional thrusts, and build sustainable partnerships with government, NGOs, industry, and other higher education institutions. Its delegates also engaged in networking sessions with partner LCUs, including Albuyog Community College, Colegio ng Lungsod ng Batangas, Polangui Community College, and Initao College, to discuss collaborative research initiatives.
