QCU, Barangay Leaders Unite for Community Food Systems and SHGBEE Policy Support
Quezon City University further strengthened its community partnerships through the Third Professorial Lecture held on December 2, 2025, titled “Barangay Gardens, Community Food Systems, and Policy Support for SHGBEE.”
The lecture convened barangay leaders, QCU faculty, CUAI personnel, and the Extension Management Office, underscoring the critical role of academic–local government collaboration in building climate-adaptive and food-secure communities.
Dr. Reyes presented the BERAE Framework as a governance-ready model that barangays can adopt to align with Quezon City’s climate action, disaster risk reduction and management, and food security programs.
A major highlight of the session was the integration of SHGBEE into barangay systems, positioning schools and households as anchors of biodiversity restoration and community food production. Barangay officials expressed strong interest in piloting SHGBEE in daycare centers, barangay halls, and public schools, and committed to including these initiatives in barangay development plans and budget cycles. The activity demonstrated QCU’s expanding leadership as a technical partner of barangays, advancing sustainable governance and grassroots innovation.
The Balik Scientist Program (BSP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), implemented through the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST–PCAARRD), is a national initiative that encourages Filipino experts based abroad to return to the Philippines—on a short-term or long-term basis—to share their knowledge, mentor local researchers, and strengthen the country’s science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.
Through this program, institutions like QCU gain access to global expertise, advanced research mentorship, and international networks that accelerate the development of high-impact research, technology transfer, and community-based innovations, particularly in priority sectors such as agriculture, food systems, biodiversity, and sustainability.
