QCU Empowers Faculty Researchers with Seminar-Workshop on Research Publication
To enhance the research and extension capabilities of its faculty members and researchers, the Research, Extension, Planning, and Linkages Office – Research Management Office (REPL-RMO) at QC University organized a seminar workshop titled “FROM MANUSCRIPT TO PUBLICATION: WRITING HIGH-IMPACT RESEARCH ARTICLES.” The event, held as part of the QCU RESEARCH AND EXTENSION CAPABILITY ADVANCEMENT PROGRAM (RECAP), took place on November 28, 30, and December 1.
Dr. Racidon P. Bernarte, Managing Director of the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Researchers and Educators, Inc. (APCORE), served as the resource speaker for the three-day workshop. The sessions were conducted at the ECE Laboratory, Laboratory Bldg., and the Audio Visual Room, 3rd Floor, New Academic Building at QCU’s San Bartolome Main Campus.
The workshop covered essential aspects of research publication, with a focus on producing Web of Science/Scopus-ready or ASEAN Citation Index (ACI)-ready publishable research papers using the IMRaD format.
The workshop comprised three modules, covering topics such as Understanding High Impact Journals and Manuscript Preparation (Module 1), Selecting Journals, Submissions, and Peer Review Process (Module 2), and Ethical Considerations, Post Publication, and Continuous Learning (Module 3).
Dr. Bernarte guided participants through the entire process, from the importance of faculty publications to practical exercises such as identifying potential journals and transforming papers into publishable articles. He emphasized the importance of publishing, which, aside from getting funding, being promoted, acquiring a job, or keeping one’s job, is ideally aimed at generating knowledge and share research findings and discoveries with the hope of improving the scientific field.
Day two included discussions on elements of a good research journal, avoiding predatory journals, and tips for successful submissions. He cautioned the participants from submitting papers to predatory journals, which are opportunistic publishing venue that exploits the academic need to publish but offers little reward for those using their services. He also highlighted the different types of predatory journals and how to avoid being victimized by such platforms.
A key highlight of his talk is on how to handle rejection of publication. Reasons for rejection may vary due to not meeting journal requirements, lack of details, ignoring publication ethics, poor grammar and style, and inappropriate data presentation.
“Researchers will always experience being rejected for publication and they need to understand how to handle such experience,” Dr. Bernarte explained.
On the final day, Mr. Angelito P. Bautista, Acting Director of REPL-RMO, led a session on publication ethics, addressing issues such as informed consent, data accuracy, and plagiarism. Participants were given time to refine their papers, ensuring a lower than 10% similarity rate, and were guided by the speaker in continuous revisions to ensure that they submit quality papers to reputable journals.
The workshop also introduced participants to the services of REPL-RMO, emphasizing the incentives available for faculty members and encouraging active participation in upcoming projects and training. The event concluded with the distribution of certificates of participation and completion and a photo opportunity with the University President, Dr. Theresita V. Atienza.
Most participants successfully submitted their articles to reputable journals during the workshop, while others were given additional time to complete the final requirements. Some of The seminar workshop not only enriched the knowledge and skills of the participants but also strengthened QC University’s commitment to fostering a culture of research and academic excellence as part of the seven priority strategic directions of Dr. Atienza.
